Our History

Our journey started in 2023 with a shared vision for positive change in economic and environmental sustainability in Khayelitsha.

Chumisa was founded by two passionate Khayelitsha residents, Sithembele Mnguni and Wezo Sinqomo, along with dedicated academics from the United States. We are driven to address global challenges through sustainable agriculture, food security, and empowering resilient communities.

Khayelitsha faces environmental and socio-economic challenges due to structural barriers, poor soil quality, and waste management. We believe composting holds the key to enriching the soil, promoting sustainable agriculture, and empowering communities for a greener future.

As we look to the future, we are furthering our commitment to reducing economic inequality. We are embracing an innovative initiative to create a decentralized vermicompost system. Khayelitsha residents will produce their own compost and sell it to us, becoming part of our movement for environmental sustainability and economic empowerment!

Our story is one of passion, resilience, and collaboration. We appreciate your support and invite you to join us in bringing about positive change—one compost heap at a time. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the world we share.
