Our Programs
Chumisa is dedicated to empowering communities, transforming waste management, and addressing food insecurity head-on. Our ultimate goal is to turn Khayelitsha into a waste-free zone. We convert waste into nutrient-rich compost that helps local farmers practice sustainable agriculture.
Centralized Vermicomposting
Every week, we collect kitchen waste from households, feed them to our over 20 thousand worms. Then, they do all the work to turn that kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost!
Household Vermicomposting
Our 30+ participating households will use kitchen waste from their own homes to feed the worm bins we’ve provided them with! We will then buy the finished compost from them when it’s ready.
Hot Compost
Our hot composting operation uses all the yard waste and food we collect that the worms cant eat! Hot compost is a slower process, but can handle a lot more organic waste at a time.
